Once the site was prepared the monument was cleaned and replaced to its original location.

The site will be dressed with topsoil and seeded to grass.

Restoration of a Historical Monuments

This elegant monument was toppled over in the Didsbury cemetery. It is interesting that it fell to the north even though it was leaning to the east. (As seen in the next photo)

Monumnet

Once the snow melted, we came to restore it to its original place. Removing some soil it was discovered the foundation was longer and wider than anticipated.

Fallen Monument 2

Once the soil was removed from around the foundation it was also discovered that the foundation was over 12" (30.5cm) deep of concrete. It looked like a hole was dug and the concrete was poured in place with several large field stones as fillers.

Fallen Monument 3

With several 5 gallon (20 liters) pails of crushed gravel in place the foundation and the three bases were leveled. The top of the base and bottom of the upright were cleaned of the original mortar. The base and upright were then drilled to facilitate the placing of rebar and adhesive to pin the upright to the base. The upright tablet (about 486 pounds - 221 kgs) was then lifted into place.

Fallen Monument 4

Before replacing the crown, the top of the upright and bottom of the crown were prepared. Before placing the crown on the top of the upright, the broken top of the crown was rounded and smoothed. (the top of the crown was missing.)

Fallen Monument 5

With the crown in place, the monument was cleaned, the soil replaced and packed around the foundation to reveal this elegant seven foot (214+ cm) high marble monument. It weights about 3,737+ ponds (1,699+ kgs) (The dark marking on the lower base is moisture absorbed from it sitting in the wet soil.)
